| Introduction | Born in San Francisco and raised in a working class suburb, most of my adult life has been in cities. I now live in a rural community, one of the poorest in Vermont. In addition to teaching courses that compare political issues across a range of countries, and writing about the politics of HIV/AIDS, multiculturalism in France, and food activism, I am a partner in a restaurant that is part of a local agricultural renaissance. Prior to graduate school, I worked for a California State Senator, working my way up from an internship to chief of staff in the district office. My work as a teacher, scholar, policy maker and activist has always focused on creating opportunities for participation and empowerment. |
