| Introduction | I came to Sri Lanka with Zigger to see what I could do to promote good self esteem in the young survivors of the 2004 Tsunami who lost their families and friends.And to see if I can assist the professionals here to work with distressed young people. Im also intending to enjoy this beautiful country with its friendly people. Now after 11 months Ive had many learning experiences and realised that older people who survived the Tsunami can also benefit from a range of activities. Now I have 2 womens groups and the opportunity this gives them to be together and enjoy each others company in a structured way is proving very satisfying'The local psychologists are keen that women discuss parenting as research suggests that the rise in self harm and suicide amongst teenage girls is partly attributable to methods of discipline in the home and school so I am hoping to give the women the chance to discuss a range of topics in a small way through role play as they practise their English. a small amount of money goes a long way here but of course funding is allways a problem and I am very grateful for the support of people in UK and in particular Hullabaloo Community choir in Brighton. |
