| Introduction | I was born into a religion that claimed it provided a complete code for life. So there I was smack in the middle of a yellow bricked road that led straight to heaven. But eventually I realized my heart cringed at the words of god; promises of eternal torment and pain for almost all of humanity. The word preached fear, demanded obedience and threatened punishment. Over time, and through questioning, the delusion fell apart. The 'virtues' being demanded were too far from the things I wanted to associate with an ethical life. And so I lost my religion, the purpose of my life and the promise of eternity. Darkness ensued, until I started to rediscover life with rationality and introspection. And I finally found a secular way to explore my own consciousness; through mindfulness and an examination of the self. |
