Introduction | We do what we can to live like a rural peasant of pre-industrial Britain in a modern urban setting. I make jams, chutneys and pickles from the crops we grow, have made cheese from cows' goats' and even buffalo milk and we're both accomplished bakers. We rent a small house on the Northern outskirts of London. We turned the front lawn into a raised bed filled with herbs, and are in the process of turning the back garden into a productive yet attractive space. We would have liked to grown crops at our previous house, but the landlord there wouldn't allow it, despite neglecting the garden almost to spite us. We also have an allotment. We don't have a car so travel to the new place by bus, carrying tools, camping stove and catering supplies in a shopping trolley. I still don't feel like it's enough to future-proof our lives, but I know that when, in the next decade or so, drinking water, oil and ready supplies of food become more scarce, we'll be one step ahead. |
