| Introduction | Being an ally is a life journey. For me it means continually learning to put aside my priviledge, ego and defensiveness in order to really listen, share, act and support; in other words be an ally, not a boss or an adviser, not a know-it-all or inflexible. ---- Allyship means thinking things through, attempting to prevent my own mistakes and learning from the ones I make. ---- Being an ally isn't limited to immigrant rights or one particular cause. Oppression knows no boundaries and all forms of it intersect. ---- Allyship means supporting other allies by challenging them and by accepting their challenges of me. ---- Most of all, being an ally means two things: 1) challenging and educating my own community and 2) being present, being there when another community wants allies to be. |
