Introduction	The author retired from the IAS in December 2010. A keen environmentalist and trekker he writes for various publications and websites on the environment, governance and social issues. He has published seven books: THE TRAILS LESS TRAVELLED (2015), THE SPECTER OF CHOOR DHAR (2019), POLYTICKS, DEMOCRAZY AND MUMBO-JUMB0 (2020), THE WASTED YEARS (2021), THE DEPUTY COMMISSIONER'S DOG AND OTHER COLLEAGUES (2023), DISAPPEARING DEMOCRACY-DISMANTLING OF A NATION (2024) and the most recent one, HOLY COWS AND LOOSE CANNONS (2025).He divides his time between Delhi and his cottage in a small village above Shimla.
