| Introduction | Since 1996, JIM BYERS has been the producer/host of The Latin Flavor/Classic Edition (Sundays, 6:00pm until 8:00pm) on Washington DC’s WPFW 89.3 FM (wpfw.org), programmed using his collection of over 16,000 vintage “Palladium-era” recordings. Called “a rare creative gem on local airwaves” by long-time Washington Post radio columnist and historian Marc Fisher, this unique archival program goes deeper still: exploring the genre’s sweeping impact on popular culture, and celebrating its critical role as a cross-cultural bridge between Latinos and African-Americans. Jim’s varied activities as a lecturer, writer, filmmaker and presenter ensure that his dedication to Latin-jazz goes far beyond the airwaves. In April 2013, Byers began season 4 of "Metro Mambo" - his Latin-jazz lecture series for the Smithsonian Institution. |
