| Introduction | Situated in Fairview Road, Brindhaven in Verulam, kwaZulu Natal, South Africa. The Gayathri Peedam, a non-profit organisation, was established in 1985 by Swami Shankarananda in order to assist in the fulfilment of community needs, including fundraising projects to help the elderly and underprivileged, curb growing substance-dependency and aid disaster-relief victims, as well as to provide a spiritual haven for all devotees dedicated to Self- and God-awareness. It has since become an efficient ashram, and the only temple in the world boasting two Gayathri murthis (deity statues). It is also the only temple in Africa in which a Babaji Shrine is installed. The mother Gayathri temple and ashram is run by Gayathri Siddhar, Swami Dr RK Murugesu, and is situated in Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka. Swami Murugesu also has a smaller Gayathri temple in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka and another in Chennai, India. Following entries in this blog will include information on the different deities and their symbolism, various prayers conducted and numerous events taking place at the Verulam Gayathri Peedam. |
