| Introduction | I took a whole new turn in my life when I published my first novel at age 73. I am curious about other folks in what I call "the second out of our ninth inning" -what are we doing that is different and exciting? About The Marshlanders: After publishing three academic books (about myths and symbols) I thought it would be fun to write a page-turner. It's about how self-sustaining communities can be challenged by the greed of modern economics. I have invented a world based on the draining of the East Anglian Fens in England and the resistance of the Fen Tigers, who fought greedy developers from 1630-1930. I also use details from the Madan people of the Iraqi Marshes, which were drained by Saddam Hussein. But, most of all, Clare's adventures draw upon the rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes, and seashores that I have loved all of my life. |
