IntroductionIsland Summer is created by Pacific Underground's Pos Mavaega and Tanya Muagututi'a. The show presents traditional songs of Samoa and New Zealand in contemporary arrangements for a guitar orchestra and band. Pos Mavaega is joined by guitarists Andrew Sione, Hemi Lesatele, Seta Timo and new-comer Talia-Rae Mavaega; drummer Chris Searle and lead vocalist Tanya Muagututi'a. They are backed by the orchestra that of up to 15 guitar players. The show also dramatises a story of an elderly Samoan man who returns to Samoa for the first time in 50 years. This recollection presented in vignettes and portrayed by PU actors Ave Sua and Flo Lafai, is supported by the backing of the music played by the orchestra. The small version of the show consists of just the lead musicians - the smallest being just Pos Mavaega, Tanya Muagututi'a and Andrew Sione who have presented this format at two Sth Pacific Arts Festivals in Palau and American Samoa respectively. The Island Summer CD - a project that started in 2007 - has changed direction a couple of times leading to a new re-recording session in 2010, ready for completion in November.
