| Introduction | I am a travel consultant, which is not usually identified as a high risk occupation, but that's only because people don't know the whole truth. When you tell people you're a travel consultant, their first question is always, 'Do you get cheap flights?' If you say no, they don't believe you. If you say yes, they look outraged. Then they ask if you can get cheap flights for them too. The truth is, you feel obligated to spend all your holidays trekking off to some exotic destination, when what you really need is a novel, a cup of hot chocolate and a bed with feather pillows. In the travel industry, you find that shit happens. Tours get cancelled, flights are grounded, you make mistakes, people get stranded. 'It's OK,' your more experienced colleagues tell you when you are still wet behind the ears, 'nobody died.' Unfortunately sometimes people do. |
