| Introduction | STAG, the Smokeless Tobacco Action Group represents Australian and New Zealand users of smokeless tobacco (moist snuff) products. Smokeless tobacco (ST) products were banned in both countries in the early 1990s on extremely unfair grounds. Today many health researchers and members of the medical profession around the world agree that ST products are significantly safer than smoking cigarettes because the tobacco is not burned and smoke is not inhaled into the lungs. ST products are either loose tobacco, sometimes flavoured, or pouched tobacco that is placed between the lip and gum where it rests. Ironically, although banned, ST users are allowed to import these products for their own use, but the process is extremely cumbersome and that taxes applied are outrageous. STAG advocates that ST products should be available to all smokers as an exit strategy to smoking, but that will only happen if the ban is lifted and ST is sold where cigarettes are sold. |
