| Introduction | Following a period of 15 years with no exercise, in 2003 I decided to take up cycling. Joining Redhill Cycling Club for their weekly MTB rides I improved my fitness and skills to manage 20-30 miles each Saturday. I don’t have a long history of cycling, I’m not heavily sponsored and showered with freebies, I don’t have anyone to clean or maintain my bike for me (I built it myself), and I don’t work in the cycling or sports industry. What I do have is enthusiasm and buckets of determination. I often marvel at professional sports stars and assume they have special powers enabling them to achieve amazing feats. While I don’t doubt their fitness, ability or commitment, I wanted to see if an ordinary person can touch their league of achievement with a bit of determination and the right training. Back in September 2008, I set my mind on the South Downs Double. It is twice the furthest I have ever cycled, and a challenge only for the elite. Seeking expert advice and setting out a rigorous training programme, I am on my way to achieving something amazing. Perhaps something here may inspire you to achieve that goal you once dreamed about. |
