IntroductionThis is the seventh course in an ethnomusicology series. Previous trips have taken us to Salvador, Brazil (2008); the Bronx, NY (2009); Kerala, India (2010); as well as to Kokrobite, Ghana (2007 and 2011). In 2012 we stayed on campus and studied Zimbabwean marimba and AfroBeat. The 2013 program will be a rigorous study of Balinese music and dance in the village of Sanur, Bali, Indonesia. The program includes intensive study with 2 master artists in dance and gamelan music, both important and ancient forms of Balinese cultural expression. For this course students experience cultural immersion through daily intensive instruction with the master teachers and their assistants, as well as local social and cultural explorations. Excursions will be in forms of visits to Balinese Gamelan and Dance Studios and High School for the Arts; Balinese sacred sites (i.e. temples, traditional art market, etc.), ceremonies (i.e. ngaben, tooth filling, wedding, etc.) and performances (i.e. Barong and Kecak Dance).
