| Introduction | At present I have the privilege of facilitating the Alumni Writers Group and hosting their classes. I always enjoyed the love of words and read incessantly. My Appalachia childhood was lived in Kentucky, not the Kentucky of mint juleps and thoroughbred horses, but the backwoods of country music, coal banks, and fish fries. My people were drawn to the strength of the hills and mountains. They endured and prevailed through every famine, disease, and war thrown at them. They played their instruments from spoons to fiddles and sang out their pain, heartache and tears. For only through these things did they grow, persist, and come to understand the nature of their souls and strengths. My writing has also helped me do this. Some of us were destined to stay in the hills and maintain the heritage. Some of us were impatient and sought new adventures in more distant places. I moved from my homeland, but my writing often carries me back there in prose, poetry, and memoirs. I love teaching, and have done most of it by creating my own courses, hoping to stretch the minds I encounter. |
