Introduction Welcome to the blog outlining the trials and travels of Taylor Medlin! I am an incredibly fortunate recipient of the 2009 John K. Branner Traveling Fellowship from the UC-Berkeley CED Department of Architecture. More can be found out about the fellowship as well as the extremely inspiring journeys of the fellow recipients Nick Sowers and Nicolette Mastrangelo in the “Branner Blogs!” section below. The entries presented here will serve as a visual and literary account of my studies as I embark on this year long architectural odyssey. My proposal seeks to investigate the evolution and relevance of building craft in countries around the world as well as architects’ relationship with the art of construction. It is my belief that the profession of architecture has in many ways divorced itself from the people and techniques that actually construct our built environment, and to remain relevant we must actively seek and encourage a symbiosis of practical knowledge with the creation of design.
