About me

IntroductionThe Brown Ledge Gap Year is a program for high-school graduates and college students who want to take a break from the classroom and explore the real world. We train people to make documentaries—using video, radio or photo—as a way of encouraging and facilitating that exploration. The training takes place in Vermont, after which we take a road trip around the country, stopping for residencies in two unique American cities: Salt Lake City and New Orleans. In each city, students live together while doing their own half-time community service work and creating individual or small-group documentaries about local stories or issues. If you’re interested in making documentaries, in learning more about America, in living with a group of like-minded students, and in getting a feeling for independent life in fascinating American cities, come join us for our next adventure.
