| Introduction | Just turned over another decade, and trying to figure out if fifty is nifty. I love to learn new things, and when I do, I tend to obsess on them until I've mastered them. Sometimes brooding, sometimes gregarious with friends, but always pathologically shy amongst strangers. Dorky and accident prone, a bit of the absent-minded professor in temperament. A loving and loyal friend, but it takes me time to get to that point. I am not quick to trust or quick to judge either. My friends run the gamut, from corporate executives to former junkies and many types in between. Smart and smart-assed. Humor runs more toward irony and gallows than obvious humor; I'm more Punch and Judy than Muppet. |

| Favorite movies | Anything by Kubrick, Waters, Billy Wilder, Eastwood (as director), Kurosawa, DePalma DiLaurentis, most Spielberg, some Woody Allen, The Shawshank Redemption, Dolores Claiborne, lots of them. If I need a good laugh, Farelly Brothers (I like slapstick in movies, I'm just not slapstick myself). |
| Favorite music | Most everything, except for a lot of pop and modern country, though there is good stuff in both of those - just not much. In Classical I tend to prefer very late 19th century to mid-20th century composers. I'm especially fond of Britten, Barber, Shostakovitch, Stravinsky, Ives, Bartok, Ravel, Dvorak, Satie. In rock I tend to gravitate toward more indy genres: college radio, acoustic, rock-country crossovers, like Ryan Adams, Cowboy Junkies, Wilco. Lots of rock bands and performers from the 60's, such as The Who, Beatles, Rolling Stones, CCR, Neil Young. Opera, some blues, early jazz, roots country, bluegrass, American folk music, especially from the 30's into the early 60's |
| Favorite books | David Sedaris, Steven King, Sue Miller, Dave Eggers, but I'm much more into non-fiction, especially history, social sciences, biographies. Denise Levertov is my favorite poet; I also like Whitman, Dickinson, some Gary Snyder, Adrienne Rich. |
