Introduction In North Carolina, where I grew up, I'd greet you by saying, "Hey, y'all." In northern England, where I live now, the common greeting goes something like this: "Hiya, you all right?" (For the longest time, when people here asked me if was "all right," I figured they thought something was wrong with me.) Cultural differences fascinate me -- never more so than now, with the U.S., my native country, in turmoil and my adopted one, the U.K., going through a similar sea change. Every other week, I'll post a new essay at "Wuthering Yankee" -- a blog I'm writing in order to think about some of those differences: between countries, cultures, and individuals. "Wuthering Yankee" sums up my feelings in this political moment. Yes, I'm an American -- a Yankee -- but I'm also disoriented, almost unmoored: tossed about very hard winds. Hence the "wuthering," with thanks to Emily Bronte.
