Introduction On Friday 10 Sept 2010 I will be travelling to England to swim the English Channel. The date of the swim is between 14 to 22 Sept and depends on weather conditions. The English Channel is regarded as the 'Everest' of ocean swimming. The 35km divide between Dover - Shakepear's beach (UK) and Cape Gris Nez(France) attracts swimmers from all over the world. The legendary Des Renford heads the list of 64 Australians who have achieved this feat. My goal is to join this exclusive list. To prepare for this challenge I have been swimming between 30-50km per week and have put on 7kgs of weight to help endure the cold water. The swim will take me between 12-16 hours and requires a support boat and pilot to guide me through the busiest shipping channel in the world. Channel Swimming & Piloting Federation (CS & PF) rules require a swimmer to complete the distance without assistance and wearing only standard swimmers (no wetsuit or fast suits allowed) and a standard swimming cap and no shark cages allowed (its too cold for sharks).
