| Introduction | I’m a gravel cyclist based in the Peak District, a former bike mechanic, and — following a slightly unexpected midlife change of direction — a secondary English teacher in Derbyshire. I used to run a small but premium bike repair service, working on good bikes for people who cared about the details and selling high-end pre-waxed chains before they became fashionable. I kept the Midtech Cycles name after closing the business, partly out of sentiment and partly because the bikes never really went away. These days I balance teaching with training, riding mostly gravel, and preparing for long-distance events like the Dolby Devil and the Glorious Gravel Kielder Triple Crown. This blog documents that process honestly — the fitness, the gear, the injuries, the small improvements, and the thinking that goes with long, difficult goals. If you’re an older rider, a heavier rider, or someone quietly working away in the middle of the pack, you’ll probably feel at home here. |
