| Introduction | Who is the FUNNER GIRL? At the end of our long runs each Saturday, the real runners sit on one side of the coffee shop, and the rest of us sit on the other. We identify them as real runners as we sit in awe of the miles they run each week, and how many marathons they have accumulated, even that they ice injuries after 18 or 20 mile runs. We, on the other side of the room, are so proud of showing up and running a few miles. We have energy left after our runs, and laugh at the cruel jokes that life plays on each of us and how we cope. Soon, we notice the real runners coming to our section in awe of our dedication to being slow beginners who stay committed. We become known as the fun runners! I make sure I have fun at everything I do; work and play. I often poke fun at my own inadequacies. I have mix-matched socks, lopsided pigtails and a history of running late, but slowly I develop rituals like the best of them. You can identify me as the one eating a banana or even a whole bagel as I take off on the long run (I don’t eat an hour earlier like most). I embrace the popular phrase “runner girl” and my beloved “fun runners” to become a self-proclaimed “FUNNER GIRL!” |
