Introduction How do you break the cycle of poverty? How do you help women fulfill their own potential? How do you protect children from drugs, drive-by shootings, and other plagues of impoverished communities? In an attempt to help resolve these issues, I have long been devoted to doing my share. I have done volunteer work all my adult life – when my children were tiny and I was a stay-at-home mom, when I was teaching writing at American University in Washington, D.C., and when I worked as a writer full time after moving to Miami. The culmination was my 12-year stint as pro-bono executive director of Women’s Emergency Network. I continue as an Advisor to WEN and serve on the working boards of the National Network of Abortion Funds and the Miami-Dade County Dependency Drug Court Angels, in addition to other community work. I am always aware that mine is a life of privilege. My husband and I have a nourishing marriage, a comfortable home, four wonderful children (three of whom are married) and three thriving grandchildren. Every day, I count my blessings and every day I am aware of the need to give back.
