| Introduction | I am the author of Skin Deep: tattoos, the disappearing West, very bad men, and my deep love for them all (Harcourt, 2003). I have worked as a tattoo artist, photographer, horse wrangler, salvage-yard car crusher, temp, waitress, and phone-sex operator. I have bootlegged liquor on accident, driven a getaway car on purpose, and played cribbage at gunpoint (best two out of three).
