| Introduction | I was named after the town where I was born. My birthplace was St. Mary's Hospital, located in downtown Rogers, Arkansas. I went to school here. I graduated from the University of Arkansas. I've lived here ever since. When downtown Rogers, Arkansas was founded in the late 1800s, it was the center of commerce for the region. Today, it looks like the Northwest Arkansas, especially downtown Rogers where I grew up, has gone bust. Over the past three decades of calling Northwest Arkansas my hometown, I have watched as dozens of businesses and restaurants in the area have opened and then closed. Some lasted a few years, but most lasted only a few months. Restaurants, retailers, coffee shops, real estate companies, architects, and many others have closed or relocated. Now, I'm watching the rest of Northwest Arkansas struggle in the current economy. Walmart is laying-off workers, unemployment is skyrocketing, homes and businesses are being foreclosed. My goal is to give you, our loyal reader, an alternative viewpoint of the town I call home. |
