| Introduction | Belle Valley Ancient Grains was started in 2015 in an effort to produce a value-added crop on our 200 acre farm in western South Dakota. We have farmed here since 2002, and earned certified organic status in November of 2018. We currently grow ancient/heirloom wheat including Emmer, Einkorn, Spelt, Red Fife, Sonora White, and also Golden Flax and Chickpeas. These are marketed online at www.bellevalleyancientgrains.com and on Etsy, at farmer’s markets, via food coops, and to regional restaurants and bakeries as whole grain and as fresh/custom milled flour. Our family heritage of agriculture and milling in South Dakota goes back five generations. Essentially we are re-learning to farm as it was done 100 years ago, prior to the use of herbicides and chemical fertilizers, instead using crop rotation for crop health. I grew up on our family's Grade A dairy just a few miles from here, enjoyed a 38 year career in Engineering, returned to the area to farm 19 years ago. |
