IntroductionIn 2010, the federal government created a Task Force on Financial Literacy which traveled across the country and issued a report called Canadians and Their Money- Building a Brighter Financial Future. The overall thrust of the report is that all Canadians ought to be financially literate i.e. “have the knowledge, skills and confidence to make responsible financial decisions” I agree with this so when I changed careers in 2010, I decided to try to contribute to the initiatives outlined in this report. I started by providing education and information to my clients and by making presentations on financial literacy topics to groups of people who were interested. Someone suggested I should also write some articles about various financial topics. However, some financial literacy articles can be, shall I say…. a tad dry. It appeared that a different tack might be necessary to get beyond this. Maybe it is because I worked in the arts for a number of years before becoming a Financial Planner; but it occurred to me it might be interesting to write about financial literacy within the context of some great literary characters.
