IntroductionTeacher working conditions are student learning conditions. Adjuncts teaching have more than doubled since 1970, to 75% of classes nationwide (http://www.academicworkforce.org/CAW_portrait_2012.pdf), earning about $2700/course, no benefits. Multiply this by a full load of courses per year, and what do we get? We usually have limits on courses too. We have almost no chance for advancement, insecure continuity in our schedules, and we have no influence on governance. Moreover, because we are compensated so unequally, we need to hold several teaching positions in order to make ends meet. How can we survive? Students we teach are oftentimes DREAMers or undocumented. They are vulnerable, just like us. Refugees come here for a better life, because their lives are insurmountable. Yet here, we turn them away. We are all one, whether adjunct faculty, DREAMers, undocumented, refugees, or low-wage workers. If we all work together, our voices will carry strong.
