| Introduction | I am the Reluctant Skeptic. It is an unfortunate name. One that denotes uncertainty, hesitancy and doubt. Being labeled a "skeptic" always comes with its own baggage. But it is in name only that I hesitate, and NOT in purpose, for I believe that contrary to popular impression, skepticism is not a position; it's a process. It is a journey of confirmation, or a venture of certainty. Perhaps I should be called "The Confirmator". It seems to have a less cynical and a more heroic, proactive tone. Who knows, perhaps the Reluctant Skeptic provides me with an under-dog status that just might temper the calls of those who cry "cynic" or "debunker". To them I say, that I am much worse than that- I'm a Skeptic. The truth always hurts someone. Skepticism is an essential and meaningful component of the search for truth. It can and should have a powerful and positive influence for the good of all. Skepticism refocuses attention, influence, research and even funding away from areas that have no evidence of efficacy and towards those projects that have shown to provide benefit to the mainstream of society. It's still an unfortunate name for such a noble cause in society. |
