Introduction Cheryl Harvey Hill was born and raised in Ohio. In 1963 she began her lifelong association with the military by joining the Women's Army Corp. In 1973 she became the first woman in history to be assigned to a combat battalion in the California Army National Guard in Santa Barbara, a position she relinquished only when she was diagnosed with cancer. She later served seven more years with the California Army National Guard as a journalist and photo journalist. Ms. Hill has been married for 29 years to an active duty Army soldier.
