Introduction	For a decade, Derrick has served in various capacities in the legislative, political and civic arenas. He has worked with federal and state officials on policy matters including economic development, transportation, energy, health care and science and technology. In addition, Derrick completed eleven years of service in the Alabama National Guard and Reserves; including two rotations to Panama. Derrick has received awards and honors for his efforts in advocating for progressive federal and state policies, and for his service to country, including: 2008 Howard ‘Pete’ Rawlings Fellowship with the University of Maryland School of Public Policy; Alabama Senate and House resolutions commending his public service; Alabama Legislative Black Caucus award as a ‘Trailblazer and Successful Lobbyist’; and two Army Meritorious Service Citations for Outstanding Performance. In the civic arena, Derrick has been appointed to and has served on several boards addressing legal, health, transportation and social justice issues. He is also active in his church working to help build God’s kingdom.
