| Introduction | I wrote my first poem when I was 7. My 2nd grade teacher sent us home with an essay assignment. We had to write about fall and quote someone in the beginning. The quote had to tie in with the essay, of course. The essay was easy and I finished it in minutes the night before it was due. The quote, on the other hand, was turning into a big problem. My parents had a sizable library, but, after hours of reading through dozens and dozens of poems, I found nothing that worked. My teacher was the most demanding person in the universe. I wouldn’t dare deliver anything less than perfection. I cried. Then, I wrote, "Осень, осень золотая к нам пришла…” Then, it poured. Soon, the poem was complete; it had two quatrains and transitioned easily into my essay. The following day, in class, my teacher read it aloud, noting that I didn't give the author the proper credit. I saw the trouble coming and wondered if I broke the rules of the assignment. "I wrote it," I said timidly. "Well, I think, it's perfect," she exclaimed. This was the moment that gave me courage to write, joy to rhyme, and appreciation for the great power of the written word. |
