| Introduction | Anyone who imagines that reading this blog will lead to an understanding of why I am drawn to these cold, remote regions of the planet will be disappointed -- I don't understand it myself. My goal is to share some of the more unusual or obscure sources of information on the great white north and south, sled dogs, dry cabins, etc., available on the internet, and in books and DVDs -- adding some of my personal experiences. The photos will likely provide the best glimpse into why some become fascinated by these remote places -- the landscape, wildlife, and the humans who inhabit them. |
| Interests | This blog will be limited to my interests in life on the ice and snow. Favorite WEBSITES include: www.Iditarod.com, www.yukonquest.com, http://akweathercams.faa.gov/allcams.php, www.antarctica.ac.uk/, and weather underground sites |
| Favorite movies | Alaska's Great Race -- the Susan Butcher Story (DVD), Discovery's Iditarod (DVD), Alaska: Silence and Solitude (DVD), Kenneth Branagh's Shackleton (DVD), British Anarctica Survey's Secrets of Antarctica (DVD) -- good luck with getting this one, Around Cape Horn (available from Mystic Seaport Museum), Spiritual films (there is some snow at least in the second one):, Why Has Bodhidharma Left for the East? (Korean), Enlightnment Guaranteed (German comedy) |
| Favorite books | Winter by Cornelius Osgood (nonfiction), Koyukuk: An Alaskan Native's Life Along the River (nonfiction), Ordinary Wolves by Seth Kantner (fiction), North of Unknown: Mina Hubbard's Extraordinary Expedition into the Labrador Wilderness by Randall Silvis (nonfiction), Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the Iditarod by Gary Paulsen (nonfiction), Murder on the Iditarod Trail by Sue Henry (fiction), A Naturalist's Guide to the Arctic by E.C. Pielou (wildlife), Last Great Wilderness: The Campaign to Establish the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by Roger Kaye (nonfiction), Earth and the Great Weather: The Brooks Range, Vanishing Arctic: Alaska's National Wildlife Refuge, (these two nonfiction books are beautiful but out-of-print). Antarctica: A Guide to the Wildlife by Tony Soper (wildlife), Peter Matthiessen's End of the Earth - Voyages to Antarctica (nonfiction), Victim of the Aurora by Thomas Keneally (fiction), Note: many of these books were given to me by someone who also loves the Arctic. Thank you!, Contemporary writer Haruki Murakami is also a favorite., 'Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World' has its share of ice and snow (though I think it is one of his more depressing novels) |
