| Introduction | Redbox spent his youth near the last range of hills where the Australian alps give way to the vast plains of inland Australia. Before Europeans came the area was forested by box trees (red, yellow, grey, white and apple), stringybark and ironbark. Red box are not the majestic giants of richer soils and the mountains, but slow-growing, tight-grained, gnarled trees, wresting life from poor, stony soil. Redbox had a good education, including a degree, but could never get enthusiastic about wage slavery. He has worked in railway yards and on the tracks, in foundries and warehouses, loaded trucks, driven forklifts, dewaxed cars coming off ships from Japan, counted carcasses being lugged in and out of cold storage, taught very briefly and now makes a living editing other people's words into something that passes for English. |
