| Introduction | I have been a keen climber since 2004, and spend most weekends in the highlands of Scotland. I am keen to develop my interest in the teaching of outdoor activities - I hold the summer Mountain Leader award and am currently progressing through the training for the other relevant qualifications. I particularly enjoy combining my love of climbing with foreign travel, so have travelled extensively for my climbing. I have visited the Alps a number of times, and also climbed in Kyrgyzstan (the Tien Shan), Morocco (the Atlas mountains), the USA (rock climbing in New Hampshire) and Norway (ice climbing in Rjukan, Telemark). I find it particularly surprising and inspiring that the world still contains many spectacular unclimbed mountains that are within the reach of the keen amateur weekend climber. In Kyrgyzstan last year we made the first ascent of a 5000m peak on the Chinese border (as described here). For 2012 I have a “project” in an obscure corner of Xinjiang province in China - the result of many evenings spent poring over Soviet military maps, the American Alpine Journal, Google Earth etc... |
