IntroductionAlice grew up near Hamilton, Ontario, attended McMaster and York Universities, worked as a dessert chef, a dressmaker, and a hospital clerk in Toronto, and finally landed in Montréal/Tiohtiá:ke where she's been living since 1986. Home is in Pointe Saint Charles, a post-industrial neighbhourhood that often features in her fiction. Another home is a little yellow house on the Gaspé peninsula in northeastern Québec. She has published four books of literary fiction: a collection of short stories, Ruins & Relics (2009), and three novels, Arrhythmia (2011), Five Roses (2016), and Colours in Her Hands (2024). Ruins & Relics was shortlisted for the Quebec Writers' Federation First Book Award. Five Roses was a finalist in the Ontario Library Association Evergreen Award, and was translated into French as Le rosier de la Pointe. Colours in Her Hands was the featured title in the One Book, One Community Program in Athabasca. Short stories published in magazines have won prizes, including the Manitoba Magazine Award for Fiction. She has a new book of travel fiction, Mind the Gap, appearing in 2026.
