Introduction I am an Emeritus Professor who did research and teaching at the University of California in Los Angeles. My field is Molecular Parasitology, i.e. I study the biology on the molecular level of little organisms that cause a lot of diseases, mainly in the Tropics. But I am interested in a number of things in addition to doing research on these little beasties: Astronomy (I have a 14 inch telescope in an observatory), music (relearning the violin, which I have not played since I was 13 years old, reading and writing (?) science fiction, creating web sites and computer technology in general. I also have always loved athletics; I still ski a little and hike, but competitive basketball is these days beyond the capabilities of my aging body. Another thing I do a lot is to think about things - science, education, politics and the human condition in general. Many of these thoughts were published as little essays in a science journal called Protist. But others need a larger audience than Protist or my wife and dogs. I will begin this blog by reprinting some of these essays. I should of course emphasize that these represent my own thoughts and opinions and crazy ideas, not those of UCLA.
