Introduction | Fiction writing is the fine art of adopting personalities at will, and then casting them off -- of playing parts, masquerading. |
Interests | Lying on my back and staring at the ceiling as music blares and my thoughts dissolve; or dancing all night until I'm too entranced to realize I'm exhausted enough to faint; or raising a ruckus in Central Park with the assistance of undisciplined dogs; or shrieking for all I'm worth at baseball games; or doing the Eagle and Dancing Shiva and other delightful postures in yoga class: the list could go on and on. |
Favorite Movies | Comedies |
Favorite Music | All of it except country and rap and sentimental slop. |
Favorite Books | Don Quixote; The Decameron; Les Liaisons Dangereuses; A Hero of Our Time; The Arabian Nights. Favorite Authors: Martial, Juvenal, Petronius, Plautus, Menander, Moliere, Wilde, Kleist, Holderlin, Novalis, Strindberg, Coleridge, Byron, Mr. and Mrs. Shelly, Poe, Faulkner, Stevenson, de Navarre, de Sade, Stendhal, Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Celine, Sappho, Ovid. Ancient Greek and Roman/nineteenth century French/British Restoration authors in general. Comic playwrights from all periods and countries. The list could go on and on. |
When your science teacher smashed a frozen rose with a hammer, did you warm the petals to bring them back to life?
I stuffed the icy petal-fragments down the fronts of girls' dresses and sweaters and laughed as the girls yelled and jumped about in protest while -- purely incidentally -- warming the petals and bringing them back to life.
