Introduction A longtime resident of Canal Flats, Leslie has a great appreciation for nature and wildlife. Immersed in the beauty of the East Kootenays, Leslie enjoys the opportunities she finds to view, photograph and paint the scenes and creatures that she is fortunate to encounter. In May of 2010, Leslie illustrated a book called “Kootenay Bears”, which was written by her father, Colin Cartwright. Her pencil and pen drawings depict images of black and grizzly bears. Although Leslie has worked in many mediums over the years she prefers to paint in acrylics. She strives to compose paintings that capture the realism of her photographs and the essence of the moments she experienced while photographing her subjects. She has been an active member of the Headwater’s Art Society since it was established in Canal Flats in 2011. She currently resides there with her husband and three children.
Interests As a little girl I grew up admiring Bateman and dreamed of capturing the finite details that make his paintings come alive. I am passionate about the subjects that I choose to portray in my art. I find it difficult to invest great deals of time and energy into a composition that has little meaning for me, and so, I choose to draw inspiration and likeness from my own photography. For me, painting is like listening to music. A song will often evoke a memory or a feeling, and I find that I base my choice in subject matter on my feelings and memories.
