Introduction Esra Aygin is a freelance journalist, who extensively covers Cyprus, its politics, people, peace negotiations and reconciliation process. She has a BS in Journalism and Mass Communications from the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, New York. She started her career in Istanbul in 2000 at the news channel CNBC-e – a partnership between Turkish NTV and American NBC. She covered the Annan Plan period in Cyprus for the world’s biggest news agency, the Associated Press. She had many first-page stories published in leading newspapers such as the International Herald Tribune and Washington Post. She also worked for the American financial media company Bloomberg. In Cyprus, combining her journalism with peace activism, she played a central role in the first corporate media partnership between a Turkish Cypriot and a Greek Cypriot newspaper. Esra co-authored a glossary of offensive phrases used by the media in Cyprus to encourage sensitive reporting under OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media. A fictive report she wrote sparked the peace movement UniteCyprusNow. Esra is the winner of Turkish Cypriot Journalists Union's Peace Journalism Award.
