| Introduction | I started this blog (now moved to BreastCancerBracelets.org) because I have a family history of breast cancer. My maternal grandmother (a nurse) was first diagnosed with breast cancer at age 55, her treatment plan included a lumpectomy and radiation therapy, and she went into remission for over 10 years. At age 68, other cancers (including a brain tumor) were discovered, and she died just before her 70th birthday. My mother found a lump at age 47, followed a similar treatment plan, and has now been in remission for 6 years. I am a 31 year old healthy, active woman, but due to the history, have already had mammograms and ultrasounds done on suspect spots. Neither I nor my 24-yr old sister have been tested for the BRCA1 gene, but we both take this matter very seriously, and hope medical advances will continue to improve. I write this blog under M. Beth Parker, a form of my grandmother's maiden name, in her honor. |
