| Introduction | I grew up in a religious home and attended church frequently, but the Word of God taught me that I was a sinner who needed God’s salvation. At a Baptist revival in 1981, I repented of my sins and trusted Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. For the ensuing two years, the Holy Spirit convicted me about a call to preach through studies on Moses and Jeremiah, the preaching of Evangelist Lester Roloff, the encouragement of an Indian missionary, and the urging of my pastor. Second Corinthians 5:6-21 has informed my call to preach. This passage emphasizes the great responsibility, the great privilege, the profound gratitude, and the motivation of love. I have been greatly influenced by O. S. Hawkins, my former pastor at First Baptist Church, Fort Lauderdale, and by John MacArthur. Hawkins consistently declared God’s saving action in Jesus Christ and MacArthur’s expository preaching is deeply rooted in the soil of Scripture. Also, Prayer Life, Experiencing God, and my godly wife have helped clarify my call to preach. I never forget that this is a sacred trust: to declare God-breathed Scripture. |
