Gender Female
Location El Centro, California, United States
Introduction Growing up in Calexico, border town to Mexicali, Mexico, Lopez creates images that reflect her experience and delves into the complexity of her immediate environment. She works with both Mexican and “American” iconography, presenting images from the “border” culture informed by issues such as globalization, gender and cultural identity, the subaltern, as well as more specific border issues like immigration and “the fence.” In her work, she uses both satire and humor to address these issues. By doing this, she tries to engage the audience to bring attention to ways in which Mexicans are viewed in the United States. For the past five years she has used a caricature-like “sombrero” as a stand in for Mexicans or “Mexicaness” in the US. At times the sombrero is purely decorative, but it also becomes anthropomorphized to bring another layer of meaning depending on what the intention of the piece might be. Her work ranges from paintings and drawings to installations, working mainly with acrylics on canvas or panel.
