| Introduction | Like many nowadays, I have had several careers. I currently derive incomes from journalism and from teaching. When I first went to university I studied Asian history and languages (UNSW, ANU and UTS) and subsequently lived and worked in India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and China. I have visited every country in Asia on multiple occasions over the last 30 years. Now I write about the economics of technology change in Asia and attempt to explain contemporary issues within a historical context. But that is only one side of my interests. I also studied biological sciences as part of a medical degree I began at Otago university in New Zealand. I did not finish this degree but it gave me a fascination for evolutionary biology. I think it is my understanding of the mechanisms of natural history that give me my insights into contemporary political and economic issues, by similarly relating them to historical process. |
| Interests | Asian history, specifically the role of Buddhism in developing market economies in India, China and elsewhere. |
| Favorite movies | I really like films that combine good story with good audio and visual techniques. I know this sounds a little wanky, but I reckon alot of these techniques have been lost recently with an emphasis on special effects. I love Tampopo (Japanese); The Chess Players (Hindi) and earlier Stayajit Ray films; Akira Kurosawa films; Casablanca. |
| Favorite music | All traditions have produced wonderfully evocative music. The only music I really do not like are modern techno dance forms. |
| Favorite books | Alice in Wonderland |
