IntroductionLike many nowadays, I have had several careers. I currently derive incomes from journalism and from teaching. When I first went to university I studied Asian history and languages (UNSW, ANU and UTS) and subsequently lived and worked in India, Bangladesh, Malaysia and China. I have visited every country in Asia on multiple occasions over the last 30 years. Now I write about the economics of technology change in Asia and attempt to explain contemporary issues within a historical context. But that is only one side of my interests. I also studied biological sciences as part of a medical degree I began at Otago university in New Zealand. I did not finish this degree but it gave me a fascination for evolutionary biology. I think it is my understanding of the mechanisms of natural history that give me my insights into contemporary political and economic issues, by similarly relating them to historical process.
InterestsAsian history, specifically the role of Buddhism in developing market economies in India, China and elsewhere.
Favorite moviesI really like films that combine good story with good audio and visual techniques. I know this sounds a little wanky, but I reckon alot of these techniques have been lost recently with an emphasis on special effects. I love Tampopo (Japanese); The Chess Players (Hindi) and earlier Stayajit Ray films; Akira Kurosawa films; Casablanca.
Favorite musicAll traditions have produced wonderfully evocative music. The only music I really do not like are modern techno dance forms.
