| Introduction | The main purpose of this blog is to keep people informed on the conservation efforts being made in Irkutsk by different organisations and individuals. After finishing my post-graduate studies at Edinburgh University and having spent some time in Moscow I was lucky enough to be offered the opportunity to spend 6 months in Irkutsk, working directly and indirectly towards the conservation of Lake Baikal, so here I am! For the next six months I will be writing about my experiences, environmental concerns, news and whatever seems like a good idea at the time. I hope that this blog contributes to raise awareness of the importance of climate change and that there is no such thing as “oh but that’s far away” because “a chain is only as strong as its weakest link” and therefore, soon enough even the bits doing well at the other end would feel the effect. Finally, why is a blog based in Siberia called “Summer Sun?” Simple, because Irkutsk is one of the sunniest places in Russia (and that’s a big country) on average, over 2,100 hours of pure sunshine a year! |
