Introduction | Dr. Lalita Calabria is a plant biologist with a passion for understanding the diverse functions of secondary metabolites in plants. She holds a Ph.D. in Plant Biology from the University of Texas at Austin and a B.S. from The Evergreen State College. Lalita studied botany as an undergraduate, where she fell in love with the moss and lichen covered forests of the Pacific Northwest. Her passion for ethnobotany inspired Lalita to pursue a graduate degree in Plant Biology focusing on medicinal and phytochemical uses of Silphium L. (Asteraceae). Throughout her academic and professional career Lalita has passionately pursued teaching, research and writing. She received the “Bold Teaching Award 2006” and the “Outstanding Dissertation Award 2008” for her doctoral studies. Lalita has worked as a field botanist and taxonomist and as a visiting scholar conducting phytochemical research. Lalita is committed to educating her students and the public about the importance of plants and their fascinating chemistry. She continues her service to science as the Chair of the Phytochemical Section for the Botany Society of America and as a Research Ambassador for the NSF Research Ambassador Program. |
