| Introduction | Translate classic Science Fiction stories into Latin: Why? Well, it's a nice way to review everything I ever learned in school about the language. Quite a challenge too: back then we never practiced writing anything in Latin, we were only supposed to be able to read it. How can one ever truly understand any language by just staying on the outside? This exercise can only increase my appreciation of the classical masters, and certainly no more snobby remarks about Medieval Latin will be written in my ink. Also, this experiment forces me to look deep down into some stories I loved reading when I was younger and to which I have been returning as a reader all my life. Turning existing literary texts upside-down by applying only the minutest changes to them: Why? Well, perhaps for the same reason that I enjoy reading about the future in a language from a culture that died centuries ago: it may have some very unsettling results and it deepens your understanding of the original text greatly. But most of all: because it is fun, fun, fun. |
