| Introduction | I am a mother of school age children and I have Young Onset Parkinson's Disease. I was diagnosed 7 years ago, immediately after the birth of my second child. The only thing I knew about Parkinson's Disease at that time was what I saw on TV. Michael J. Fox would talk about it from time to time. Mohamed Ali apparently suffered from it. And images of Janet Reno appeared on the nightly news. That was the extent of my knowledge or experience with Parkinson's Disease. Now I seem to see it everywhere I go. Parkinson's disease is a progressive movement disorder that affects at least one million people in the United States. It is caused by a reduction in dopamine containing nerve cells of the midbrain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter involved in controlling movement and coordination, so Parkinson's patients experiencing a reduction of dopamine-producing nerve cells exhibit the progressive inability to initiate and control physical movements. There is currently no cure for Parkinson's disease. |
