| Introduction | I like cafés. I like coffee and tea and cakes and muffins. I like catching up with friends over a cappuccino, or catching up with work over a pot of Assam. In Oxford, cafés are like an extension of the library. In fact, some of them should probably have a sign up saying 'Silence', lest an unsuspecting group of American tourists descend, breaking the industrious hush which reigns in many an Oxford coffee house. Having sampled most of Oxford's cafés at one point or another, it seems sensible to review them, not least so I can remember which ones I like and which ones to avoid in the future. I'll be rating them on factors including work-friendliness, pretentiousness (not a good thing!), coffee, cake and customer service. Extra marks will, of course, be awarded for good carrot cake. |
