| Introduction | Thousands of years ago, Hades, god of the dead, was the loneliest of the immortals. He was an impartial and fair judge of the dead, and owned all the riches under the earth--but the gods feared him and only allowed him on Mount Olympus once a year on the Winter Solstice. One day, Hades glimpsed Persephone, the beautiful but sheltered goddess of spring. He was instantly smitten by her sweetness and beauty--but there was one little snag: her mother, Demeter, was overly protective and would not let any men near her to court her. So Hades opened up the earth and dragged Persephone to the Underworld to be his bride. For a long while, she loathed and feared him, but as time passed, she grew to know and love Hades. Torn between her husband and her life with her mother, Persephone ate an enchanted pomegranate that made her forever a part of the Underworld--but, since the earth withered and grew cold in her absence, was obliged to spend half the year in the world above, and the other half in the world below, thus creating the changing seasons. Now, isn't that much more romantic than science? |
